See you in 2019!

Networking with the best.

During 2018, over 300 people with a shared interest in the local community have joined us for breakfast or lunch, where guest speakers have provided us with an insight into some of the programs being run in our region. Stan Corner and the team at BTS are now into their 4th year as funding partner of genU Inclusion and we value their support more than ever. Thanks must be given to Rydges Geelong for providing a superb venue each time.

Back in January of 2018, 7 golfers took to The Sands in Torquay at first light to tackle one of the toughest endurance events in sport – completing one-hundred holes of golf in a single day. Our marathon men and women not only completed the task with a smile on their face, but also raised $22,500 for the ABI Clubhouse, which supports people with a brain injury in Geelong.

100 holes, 1 day? Easy.

More than 70 business partners and community members embraced the opportunity to learn more about genU by taking part in "What We Do" day. For some it was their first time; others relished the chance to return to genU! As a result of the visits, many Geelong organisations have established ongoing relationships with various divisions of genU, including Business Enterprises and Seasons.

Local businesses learn what we do best.

As part of genU Inclusion business membership, our partners were invited to participate in community volunteering opportunities. These included days at genU Central, St Laurence Park Lara, genU Business Enterprises, and genU's Cox Rd site.

Our members volunteer their time all year.

MatchWorks and Geelong Cats have partnered over the last two years to deliver the Cats Match program, which is targeted at Geelong youth from both jobactive and Disability Employment Services programs. As part of this program, genU Inclusion and the Centre of Excellence provide job seekers with interview clothing, make-up and hair makeovers.

Job advice and the makeover to match.

First State Super organised a skills session at St Mary's football ground with Geelong Cats players James Parsons and Matthew Hayball. genU Adventure participants kicked footies and got the chance to meet and take photos with Cats mascot Half Cat and genU's very own ambassador, Eugene!

Geelong's 'super' heroes.

genU's artX had a new name and renewed enthusiasm at its three locations across Geelong, Wyndham and Mornington. The exhibitions received entries from a diverse group of participants who have a passion for the arts. artX, the combination of the KarnivART and ARTS Unlimited events, provides the platform for talented artists to exhibit their work in a supported, inclusive environment.

Artistic flair on show at genU's creative display.

The ParaGolfer is a revolutionary machine that allows people with a disability that use a wheelchair to play golf in an upright standing position. genU Inclusion set its sights upon raising money to purchase one of these units to allow people in the local area to reconnect with the game of golf. Our initial Stand Up and Play golf day at The Sands Torquay (supported by TAC) was unfortunately rained off, but we still raised $23,000 towards the cause.

Storms couldn't dampen our spirits.

One of the most anticipated events for our clients and corporate partners is our Winter Workplace Big Day Out. Held in June at the Geelong Basketball & Netball Centre, the day consisted of volunteers from local businesses together with students from Grovedale College joining in activities with genU clients.

Kick, catch, dance? We jump at the chance.

The 'Journey to Work' program, sponsored by MatchWorks, is specifically designed to assist women with significant barriers to employment in preparing to enter the workforce. The ongoing program, which features between 15 and 30 participants each intake, is delivered in partnership with The Centre of Excellence and Rydges Geelong.

This journey to work is paved with excellence.

After the overwhelming success of the inaugural Job Shadowing program in 2017, the program continued again in 2018 and featured a diverse group of genU job seekers with a disability. Businesses from around Geelong took in at least one participant to have them 'shadow' a worker and guide them in their first steps towards permanent employment.

Job ready? Without a shadow of a doubt.

Wyndham continues to be a major growth area for genU, and the Inclusion team have been facilitating a number of events in the location over recent years as demand for services grows. The highlight of the year was again our Wyndham Workplace Big Day Out, held mid-year at the state-of-the-art Eagle Stadium in Werribee.

A whirlwind day for our Wyndham crew.

As part of genU's commitment to purchasing a ParaGolfer, allowing people with a disability to reconnect with the game they love, we designed the 'X-Golf Open' in conjunction with X-Golf Geelong –  a tournament at (virtual!) Pebble Beach where anyone can win. Not only did entry fees raise money for the ParaGolfer, but the competition winner won tickets to stay and play at the iconic Barnbougle course in Tasmania.

X marks the spot for keen Geelong golfers.

Our genU Carers High Tea saw 100 deserving carers from the Geelong region take a well-earned break from their responsibilities to celebrate National Carers Week at a special event just for them.  Sponsored by MatchWorks and Geelong Connected Communities with support from Rydges Geelong, GMHBA and Bay 93.9, the Carers High Tea is held annually.

Caring for our carers.

The genU Big Night Out was established in 2003 and is the region's only fully inclusive gala event. Held annually, it attracts a diverse audience which includes genU corporate partners, staff, community groups, people with a disability, their families and friends. This year's theme was 'Prom Night'. More than 550 people in attendance got on board with some fantastic costumes on display.

Prom Night fit for a king... and queen.

Barwon Heads Golf Club was the prestigious venue for our Stand Up and Play golf day... take two. Our efforts at The Sands earlier in the year were dampened by freak thunderstorms, but in a beautiful twist of fate, the sun shone brightly for more than 100 golfers to take part in a day raising money for a ParaGolfer. A live auction and raffle helped secure the funds needed to purchase the machine.

A stunning Barwon Heads backdrop for golf.

The sweltering heat might have tried its best to keep everyone away, but there was no chance that our genU participants from all around Victoria would turn down the opportunity for a Big Day Out. Corporate volunteers from the Geelong region competed hand-in-hand with participants in sports such as footy, soccer and cricket, as well as activities like dancing and magic tricks.

Our participants beat the heat for the Big Day Out.

GMHBA live and breathe their mantra of 'people before profit', and this year they continued their community volunteering program with genU Inclusion. The visit from their executive team to our Business Enterprises headquarters on Douro St was a particular highlight! We've enjoyed a fruitful partnership with GMHBA and look forward to working with them again in 2019.

Corporate volunteering

WorkSafe are committed to supporting their staff to engage with the Geelong community. This has been enhanced through the partnership that they are continuing with genU Inclusion. Volunteers from WorkSafe worked hand-in-hand with our supported employees while they took to their everyday tasks.

Corporate volunteering

Ford's outstanding global commitment to supporting their local communities was reflected in their partnership with genU Inclusion this year. Representatives from across the business volunteered to give back to the community and spent time at Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary and Serendip Sanctuary in Lara.

Corporate volunteering

TAC's support towards genu Inclusion has continued to grow over the past few years with their sponsorship of sporting events such as the Hundred Hole Hike and our 'Stand Up and Play' day leading to them extending their partnership to include corporate volunteering in 2018. We look forward to many more enjoyable outcomes with TAC in the coming years.

We ventured out to the Golden Plains Shire for this year's Gourmet Food & Wine Trail, again hosted by the lovely Kylie Oliver of gt and sponsored by VicSuper. Inverleigh Cellar and Kitchen hosted entree, the picturesque Clyde Park was our venue for mains, and dessert was at Lethbridge Wines Cellar Door, which was catered by Seasons. Overall, more than $8,500 was raised towards genU's purpose-built house in Leopold, Melaluka.

Wining and dining in the sun –  it's just plain fun!

Did you pick a winner this year? genU did at Rydges Geelong, with the venue decked out lavishly to celebrate the most frock-filled time of year, Melbourne Cup day. genU participant Marcus was a worthy winner of the Fashions on the Field while friends and business partners of genU took part in the festivities throughout the afternoon.

Horsing about in town, genU was up for the Cup.

Note: this is actual time spent away from business and is in addition to the in-kind support provided by many organisations.
