It's been a big year.    Let us show you.

genU Inclusion Year in Review 2019

Wowing Winter Workplace Big Day Out.

One of our favorite events of the year for our clients and corporate partners is the Winter Workplace Big Day Out.  Held in June at the Geelong Basketball & Netball Centre, the day consisted of fun activities with volunteers from local businesses and genU clients, as well as the lovely students from Grovedale College. Our big days out are something we look forward to each year, and we are excited to keep making them bigger and better in 2020.

ParaGolfer's popular all abilities clinics.

genU partnered with Golf Australia and the Curlewis Golf Club for six all abilitiy golf clinics to allow people to come and try the ParaGolfer.  The ParaGolfer is an all-terrain wheelchair designed to assist people with all abilities to stand up and play golf. The friendly, fun and relaxed atmosphere made for fantastic clinics. We are dedicated to raising more money to purchase another ParaGolfer next  year, so people with all abilities are able to play the game they love!

Community is the New Black.

Back in March, a number of high profile individuals from the Geelong business community were "locked up" at the Old Geelong Gaol as part of our 'Community is the New Black' initiative. Fitted out in shackles and handcuffs, their charge sheets were read, processed and they were then allocated to a prison cell.

Together, our inmates raised $10,500 to support the re-development of Karingal House.

A 'hole' lot of fun.

The 2019 Hundred Hole Hike, presented by TAC saw 11 golfers tee off at 5:30am to complete 100 holes of golf each. Each of the golfers walked a phenomenal 60km throughout the day, often in 30 degree heat, for a total of 15 hours each.  Combined, they played 3863 shots, raised $21,000 and all passed the 100 hole barrier before dark.

Cats Match Makeover.

MatchWorks and the Geelong Cats delivered its third year of Cats Match - a 10 week program helping Geelong youth from both Jobactive and Disability Employment Services programs find employment. The program focuses on improving participants physical and mental health and well-being, whilst learning employability related skills.

artX exhibitors impress again.

genU's artX headed to Warrnambool for the fist time this year, celebrating a diverse group of participants who have a passion for the arts.  Adding to the existing locations of Geelong, Wyndham and Mornington, the exhibitions received 213 entries, providing a platform for talented artists to exhibit their work in an inclusive, supportive and fun environment.

Celebrating our Carers.

In partnership with Geelong Connected Communities, GMHBA and MatchWorks, carers from across the Barwon Region were treated to a High Tea at Rydges Geelong to acknowledge and support the incredible contribution unpaid carers make to our society.

Local leaders learn what we're all about.

"What We Do Day" was back for another year as we hosted business partners and community members for a tour of genU facilities around Geelong. The day provided an overview of the ways businesses can become involved with genU as well as the services we provide. We are thrilled that many Geelong organisations have continued to establish relationships with various divisions of genU.

Morning meet-ups.

In 2019, over 300 people with a shared interest in the local community have joined us for breakfast or lunch, where guest speakers have provided us with an insight into some of the programs being run in our region. We'd like to thank Lyn Swan, Woon Ooi and Simon & Kaylene Reeves for taking time to share their stories with us.  We'd also like to thank Stan and Mel and the team at BTS for their amazing support and Rydges Geelong for providing us with a perfect venue on each occasion.

Happy Member Volunteers.

Throughout the year, our partners volunteered their time to support local programs with cooking, gardening, hamper preparation and vegetable processing.  We are incredibly grateful for their on-going support of our member volunteer days.

Wining, dining and shining for house re-development.

For this year's Gourmet Food & Wine Trail we ventured to wineries in the Surf Coast Shire.  We started with entrees at Waurn Ponds Estate, headed to Mount Duneed Estate for the main course and then finished off with dessert catered by ALMA and Season's Gourmet at Bellbrae Harvest.  The event helped raise more than $16,000 towards genU's Karingal House re-development.  Special thanks to Kylie Oliver of Erskine Media for hosting and our event partners VicSuper & Rendine Constructions.

Making Tara's dream a reality.

Tara McGowan was just 23 years old and studying to become a special needs teacher when she tragically passed away from an asthma attack in 2015.  At the beginning of the year we were thrilled to officially open Tara's dream, which saw nine residents receive the keys to their new home. In partnership with the Tara's Dream Foundation, genU, City of Greater Geelong, our business partners and passionate parents, the supported accommodation development was build in Ocean Grove.

Just over $300,000 was extraordinarily raised throughout the  partnership and we would like to give thanks for all the incredible support over this journey.

Our new home...

2019 was a very exciting year for genU as we opened up our brand new support hub building in Highton. With our divisions being previously scattered around Geelong, we were finally able to connect our administrative facilities. Our new location allows us to be more efficient as a team and enjoy all the benefits of working together, ensuring genU is the best it can be.

Journey to Work, helping women in need.

The 'Journey to Work' program, sponsored by MatchWorks, is specially designed to assist women with significant barriers to employment in preparing to enter the workforce. The ongoing program, which features between 15 and 30 participants each intake, is delivered in partnership with The Centre of Excellence and Rydges Geelong.

Melbourne Cup high tea fit for royalty.

genU galloped into Rydges Geelong to enjoy all the action of the Melbourne Cup. In partnership with Geelong Events Centre, we threw a glamorous event with guests indulging in a decadent high tea, fashion on the fields, live music, raffles, prizes and of course, a live screening of the race that stops the nation. All proceeds from the day went towards purchasing Christmas presents for supported employees at genU Business Enterprises.

Boot Scootin'

Big Night Out

Corporate volunteering

genU said Yee Haa to our annual Big Night Out, a fully inclusive gala event established in 2003. The night attracts a diverse audience, including corporate partners, staff, community groups, people with disability, their families and friends. This years sold out event was themed 'Boot Scootin', with up to 550 people in attendance.  Some fantastic costumes and dance moves were on full display.

Corporate Volunteering - GMHBA.

Ford's well renowned commitment to community support through volunteering was showcased in their partnership with genU Inclusion again this year.  Representatives from across the business spent time volunteering at Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary in Barwon Heads and genU's St Laurence Park in Lara. We look forward to another year of Ford's generous contributions.

Stand Up & Play.

GMHBA continued their successful community volunteering program with genU Inclusion this year. Highlights included the day disco at Piano Bar and a Cooking Class at our Cox Rd facility with the full GMHBA executive team and participants. We look forward to continuing our partnership in 2020.

Summer Workplace

 Big Day Out.

We returned to the prestigious Barwon Heads Golf club for our Stand Up and Play Golf day, where 100 golfers took part driving and putting their way around the beautiful golf course to raise money for a second ParaGolfer for the Barwon Region.

Golfers helped raise over $50,000, securing enough money for a second ParaGolfer.

Christmas spirit at Bendigo Bank Pop-up Stall.

Our 2019 Summer Workplace Big Day Out wasn't as hot as last year, but was still on fire as genU participants from all around Victoria enjoyed a day of fun activities.  Along with some of genU's Corporate Volunteers and students from Grovedale College, participants competed in sports, bean bag tosses and duck duck goose, as well as enjoying some dancing and a delicious sausage sizzle. We'd like to thank all involved for such a fantastic day and helping our participants have a fun and enjoyable time.

Melaluka Makeover.

X GOLF Competition.

Davidson's Hampers.

In partnership with X-Golf Geelong and Rotary Club of Geelong we crowned the winner of the X-Golf Cup Challenge.  This competition helped raise funds to support the purchase of our first ParaGolfer.

After fundraising $30,000 in 2018 to complete a much needed makeover on the backyard of our Melaluka Respite House, over 20 volunteers turned up to help us roll out grass, fill the garden beds with plants and complete some much needed painting.

The residents and their families were thrilled with this change and are excited about having this much needed additional space.

In partnership with long-time supporter Bendigo bank, the genU School Leaver Employment Support groups hosted a pop-up stall selling Seasons Gourmet hampers and jams as well as offering gift wrapping for a gold coin donation. Proceeds contributed towards much need upgrades to our supported accommodation 'Karingal House' in East Geelong.

The generous staff at Davidson's Accounting donated 20 goods hampers to be delivered to genU's supported accommodation houses throughout the Barwon region.

Tara's Dream Foundation

Residents of Tara's Dream were thrilled when the McGowan family delivered a brand new Hyundai iMax to their new home. The Tara's Dream Foundation teamed up with Blood Toyota Geelong to provide the vehicle, which will give residents more convenience and independence when travelling around Ocean Grove and beyond.
